Airport Insecurity
A game about inconvenience and the tradeoffs between security and rights in American airports.
About Airport Insecurity

While the government wants you to believe that increased protection and reduced rights are necessary to protect you from terrorism, the effectiveness of airport security practices is uncertain.

Airport Insecurity allows you to explore these issues in context: the game's rules are based on government reports about airport security practices since 2002. To consider the game's implications fully, players are encouraged to play the game while waiting in line at airport security.

Airport Insecurity has three play modes: Normal, Practice, and Endless Queue.

Make your way through inefficient and questionably secure airport security the 138 most trafficked airports in the USA. First, use the directional key or the 2, 4, 6, and 8 keys to move your traveler through the line. Be careful not to dawdle or run into other passengers -- they will become irate and reduce your health. If your health runs out, you'll be sent to the back of the line. Some passengers are more impatient than others, so keep your wits about you. The length and speed of the queues are based on real FAA documentation of the security wait times at each airport.

Once you get through the line, you'll have to make your way through the security checkpoint. The items you carry are shown at the top of the screen. When you approach the x-ray belt, use the 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 keys to place objects on it. However, the more items you successfully pass through the checkpoint, the more bonus points you score for the level. You can use a plastic bin (9) to store up to three small items. Your fellow passengers remain as pushy as ever, so be quick to get your items on the belt. You may choose to drop "dangerous" items like scissors, lighters guns, and knives in the trash can to avoid detection. If security catches you doing something wrong, you'll lose a life and be subjected to an unfortunate body search. Some airports require you to take off shoes and belts, others don't. It's is up to you -- Are you willing to get undressed in public?

The competence of the security agents is based on real documentation from the TSA and investigative media regarding violations and failures of airport security since 2002. Much of this information is now classified because the government doesn't want you to know how bad it really is. In 2003, the average airport failed to detect 24% of the contraband carried by undercover agents. Try to get a gun or a knife through security -- you'll be surprised how easy it is. How much security are you really gaining for all the rights you're giving up?

Once you lose all three lives your game is over. Try to get as far as you can -- your top scores will be stored in the High Score list.
